I just wanted to start out this post by saying that I am not really a romcom girl. I can certainly tolerate them — my mom made me go with her to a midnight screening of The Proposal, and I didn’t hate myself for going. And there are some that are thoroughly solid, like Legally Blonde (the first one), Strictly Ballroom and Miss Congeniality. So, fast forward in my romcom viewing to yesterday, when I saw (500) Days of Summer for the first time. My review is: -_-. I was bored, I never laughed and it wasn’t deep enough to actually be thought-provoking or interesting. It was cute, but cute can’t carry a whole movie. Also, it was predictable city. Like, zzzzzzzzzzzzz, seriously.
A few hours later, when I was having trouble falling asleep, I watched the Norwegian romcom, Buddy. And it was amazing.
Plus, Kristoffer, the main character was kind of cute and wore that UCLA shirt a whole lot. The movie is about some flatmates who are clearly losers (two hang billboards for a living and the third is terrified of leaving the neighborhood). They accidentally become famous and what follows is a thought-provoking (suck it, (500) Days of Summer) look on how fame affects friendships and love. I loved the twists is the story because they were so effortless and not contrived or cheesy. Super solid movie. Watch it.
I’ll check it out!
I love romcoms. I thought 500DOS was dull dull dull. I haven’t seen the other; I must try it.
me too! I heard so many good things about it. It definitely didn’t live up to the hype.
